What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice from India that combines movement, breathing, and meditation. to harmonise body, mind, and spirit.

Its physical postures (āsanas) strengthen and balance the body, while breathwork (prāṇāyāma) calms the nervous system.

Yoga is a spiritual path aiming for self-awareness, inner peace, and connection with the deeper self.

At its heart, yoga means “union”, the integration of the individual with the whole.

I teach pure or Hatha yoga.

Yoga improves flexibility, muscle strength and tone, better posture and body awareness. As well as increasing mental wellbeing, positivity and self-love.

Yoga is life changing!

Yoga helps connect mind, body and spirit, Mel demonstrates how warrior pose to feel strong , embodied, calming anxiety. Picture is in autumnal nature, Mel is barefoot on the grass and leaves, looking happy.

In 2013 was flat out working in a busy full time job. Raising sons on my own. I !I was stressed out, overwhelmed and so tightly wound up I felt I could snap at any moment,

Looking for a solution I joined a yoga class. It was a transforming experience. The practice quietened my busy mind as I concentrated on the movements.

The focus on the breath calmed my overwhelm.

During the deep relaxation at the end (Śavāsana) I felt a peace I hadn’t experienced in a long time.

Tears arose as I realised how removed I had become from my authentic self. How life had run away with me, how lost and unhappy I was.

Yoga brought me home to myself.
Today, I walk gently upon the earth, connecting deeply. I am happier and healthier than I have ever been. Yoga is life changing!

I offer my thanks and gratitude to all my teachers. For my teacher training to the wonderful Yoga Niketan Ashram . Where I learned to embody yoga as a spiritual practice.

It does not matter your age, flexibility, size or sex. This practice helps you to reconnect to yourself and love yourself just as you are. To improve your mental and physical health at a pace that works for you.

Great question! If you have one, a yoga mat, if not a large towel. A light blanket, a water bottle, cushions or blocks to support you in some of the postures. An open and willing heart and mind

Comfortable clothing you can move easily in—leggings, joggers, or shorts with a t-shirt are all fine. You don’t need special gear. A warm layer for the relaxation at the end.

Absolutely. The class is open to beginners. Movements are gently guided and you can take things at your own pace. I encourage you to really get to know yourself and to take it gently, rest when you need to. We don’t push ourselves too hard. This is a self-compassion focused practice, we move with self-kindess.

You don’t need to be flexible to start yoga! Yoga is about working with your own body. Variations and modifications are offered for different needs, and you’re always welcome to rest. I have a lady who joined after recovering from a double hip replacement. She was thrilled when after only a few weeks she was able to get herself up off the floor and move around more freely. Please check with your GP if they are happy for you to try a gentle class.

Classes usually last around 60 minutes. Please allow time to arrive and settle in before the start time. Online, entering the Zoom room at 8:40 am is good. In person arriving 5/10 mins before the start time. At the Venue in St Merryn we stay for tea and coffee after class which you are warmly invited to join. The cost is £10 per class as drop in. I offer a discount for paying monthly and concessions are available.

If you are attending an in person class please bring cash. Or you can bank transfer. If attending online I accept bank transfers and PayPal payments. Please message me for the details. I simply ask that you pay in advance of the class, thank you. I offer discounts for paying monthly by standing order and if you are in financial difficulty please let me know.

It’s normal to feel unsure before your first class. You’ll be warmly welcomed, and you can always sit back and watch if you need a moment. If you are particularly anxious you are welcome to contact me in advance for a chat.
